By Chief Jody Rainey
March 13, 2022

On March 11 at 1759 hours, Cherryhill Township Station 240 with automatic mutual aid from Pine Township Station 570 were dispatched to Penns Manor School for an automatic alarm activation. 240 Fire Chief Jody Rainey immediately contacted Penns Manor Superintendent Daren Johnston and Facilities Supervisor Mark Dalton and learned the location of the alarm as the Penns Manor High School-Industrial Arts area. Chief Rainey communicated this information to dispatch who in turn communicated to responding units.

240 Second Assistant Fire Chief Jason Geneva arrived on scene as 240 Command and reported smoke showing from the roof area of the Vocational Agricultural shop. Engine 243 was assigned interior operations with Captain Jr. Sabo leading the interior crew of Engine 243. Captain Sabo reported smoke in the interior in the areas of the vocational agriculture shop, classroom, hall and gymnasium areas. Crews were still searching for the source of the smoke. Chief Geneva upgraded the alarm to a possible commercial structure fire and requested mutual aid assistance full company from Clymer Station 150 and Commodore Station 540. Geneva also requested Indiana Fire Association Station 100 to respond a Ladder Truck.

Pine Township Engine 572 was ordered to supply water to Engine 243 and Engine 241 was ordered to establish a hydrant to supply Engine 572 if needed. 240 interior crew reported the source of the smoke was from syrup burning on a stove in the Vocational Agriculture shop area. The source of the smoke was eliminated. Chief Geneva cancelled responding units from Commodore 540 and Indiana Fire Association Station 100. Chief Geneva ordered Ladder 159 to access the roof and locate any air handler that would exhaust smoke from the school and ordered Rescue 242 to advance smoke ejector fans to aid ventilation.

Upon completion of assignments, all units returned to quarters.
